I don’t know about most people, but my go-to source of entertainment is YouTube of all things. Thus, it is also appropriate that I learn of Apple’s newest iPhone launch through YouTube’s trending feed. And, like most people, I was surprised to meet iPhone X. The iPhone X, pronounced 10 instead of X as most people are aware of by now, is a 10th-anniversary edition of the Apple iPhone and it truly is remarkable. This one of a kind phone was formally announced to the world on 12th of September, 2017, was launched worldwide exactly 54 days later i.e. 4th of November 2017.
Apple’s jump from iPhone 7 to X reminded me how Windows simply leapt from Windows 7 and 8 to 10 a few years ago. This made me simply dismiss the idea, thinking that X certainly is the perfect name for their anniversary edition.
Imagine my surprise, when in an attempt to learn more about iPhone X, I opened up Apple’s YouTube Channel, only to find that Apple launched an 8th generation iPhone and I never knew about it. What is more amazing is the fact that up until 23rd of July, 2017, the only thing Apple officially talked about was iPhone 7.
I did a little digging and here is what I found. Courtesy of Apple’s YouTube Channel, here is a timeline of promotional videos by Apple.
23rd of April, 2017
The last iPhone 7 related video posted by Apple. It was named “iPhone 7 — The Rock x Siri Dominate the Day” and showed Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson using Siri to go about his day.
12th September 2017
Apple released 2 videos on iPhone 8 and 8 Plus namely, “iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in 8 seconds” and “iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus — Unveiled”. This upload was followed by 2 more videos i.e. “iPhone X — Introducing iPhone X” and “iPhone X is here”, which, as the name says, first introduced iPhone X to the world and everything blew out of proportions.
15th September 2017
Pre-order for iPhone 8 officially began.
22nd September 2017
Apple posted a video called “8 things to love about iPhone 8” and officially began shipping the latest launch to customers who had preordered the phone.
The Bottom Line
Apple has some great products under its belt and iPhone 8 and 8s are no different. It combines the best of iPhone 7 to the newest, never seen before features of iPhone X, but it was never able to cope with the thunder that accompanied the announcement of iPhone X. Every single Apple product tends to see a whole lot of fanfare. They are tested, analyzed, broken down and pro and coned within days of its launch. I would have to admit that Apple did promote both its iPhone equally, but since the world chooses to focus on iPhone X, iPhone 8 was left in the dim shine of its taillights.
So world, we are formally introducing iPhone 8. We love it a whole lot more than iPhone X and so would you.
